Half Moon Bay Coastside History Museum

A major project is underway to convert the Johnston Barn into a museum. Located just behind the jail building, the barn will provide ample space for interactive interpretive exhibits.

Some of the museum’s features may include stories about:

  • Native Ohlone who inhabited villages in each watershed for 12,000 years
  • Gaspar de Portolá’s Expedition mapping the area for Spain in 1769
  • Spanish colonists who followed Juan Bautista de Anza,
dotting the coast with missions & presidios
  • Mexican land grants & secularization that released mission lands
  • Gold Rush explosion of people & industries
  • Shore whaling, shipwrecks & maritime endeavors
  • Rise & fall of the Ocean Shore Railroad
  • Rum runners & boot leggers during the Prohibition Era
  • World War II’s impact on the Coastside
